Coffee Cup Charlotte
The Coffee Cup is a meat and three located just outside of downtown Charlotte. They have been a landmark in their current location since 1946.
This is during the time period where white patrons ate inside the restaurant and black patrons had to eat outside.
That changed in the 1950s when Myrtle Heath, a black women, purchased the restaurant from its white owners. The Coffee Cup became one of the first restaurants in the south that allowed black patrons to eat inside with the white patrons.
The reason I am babbling about this is that Beazer Homes, the owners of the property, want to tear down the Coffee Cup and turn it into a condo development.
The Coffee Cup is a landmark in Charlotte, with 60 years of history in this city. The owners are trying to get the building designated a historic landmark by Charlotte Historic Landmarks commmision to save the structure. I am actually surprised it was not already designated as a historic building.
The vote for the designation has been set for November 13th. However, the Beazer Boobs, don't want to wait. They have basically sent the Coffee Cup an eviction notice to shut them down and shut them up. More information here.
I personally think the building should be saved. I think any developer could easily incorporate the place into any design they might have in mind. What a selling point to have a thriving eatery in your neighborhood.
I also think that anyone considering purchasing a new home should call Beazer(770) 481-7830) and say that they would not buy from a builder that destroys valuable history.
