Well Super Bowl XL is finally over. It was a pretty decent game as far as Super
Bowls go. I think the best game so far during the playoff season was the Indy/Pitt game, but at least this Bowl was not a blowout in the first half.
Along with the game, a lot people watch the Super Bowl to see new cutting edge advertising. In the past there have been quite a few water cooler talks about the Super Bowl TV spots. In 2005 we had the Pepsi P-Diddy ad and in 2004 there was the the Budweiser Sleigh Ride. And I think we all remember the hype when Apple was the first advertiser to spend $1million for an Ad slot.
Last year my favorite advertisement, and the one that generated the most controversy, was the GoDaddy.com ads. GoDaddy is my domain registrar and it was neat seeing a dot com advertising on the big game with a pretty darn funny spot. They had one this year that was cute and they document the process of 14 revisions to get it through the ABC censors on their website. It's funny because I find the Pepsi ad in the same genre as the GoDaddy ad, but I bet they didn't go through half the battle GoDaddy did to get on the air
However, this year I found the ads pretty much dull. The Hummer ad was probably the worst one. Followed by a close second by the American Home Health advertisement. It seems that the Janet Jackson stunt from a few years ago is going to have us wallowing in mediocre Super Bowl advertisements for the next few years.
I am Dallas Cowboy fan. Obviously, since my team is not the Super Bowl, I need something to draw me to the gig. It used to be the advertising because, unless your team is in the game, the last 10 or so bowls have been passing dull. The ads give the thing flavor for the people that don't have their teams in the game. It makes me wonder if it is going to be worth watching next years game if there isnt that sideshow in the ad arena.
While I am conservative financially, I am pretty much liberal on most other societal issues and it bothers me that we as Americans can be so sensitive to some issues. If you don't like it, change the channel, but don't ruin everyone else's enjoyment by censoring public television. Oh well off my high horse.
You can find a list of most of the Super Bowl advertising at IFilm. I found it a nice run through memory lane.
